Storing Data On Atomic Roundabouts
There are right-handed and left-handed yoghurts, right-handed and left-handed snail shells, and right-handed and (occasionally) left-handed screws. Scientists at the University of Bonn have now demonstrated the existence of right-handed and left-handed “magnetic vortices”. Through their research, in collaboration with colleagues from Berlin and Geneva, they believe that this physical phenomenon could eventually lead to the construction of faster and more reliable hard disks. The physicists have reported their discovery in Nature.
Physicians Breathe Life Into Cutting-edge Stem Cell Procedure
Patients living with Myasthenia Gravis (MG) may breathe easier thanks to a rare bone marrow transplant procedure performed at The Bone Marrow Transplant Program at University of California, San Diego Medical Center, the only program in the western United States that has attempted this procedure.
Targeting Sugars May Revolutionize Treatment Of Bone Disorders
Researchers in the United Kingdom and Germany are reporting that one of the most fundamental scientific beliefs about the structure of human bone is incomplete — a finding they say could have sweeping impact on treatments for osteoporosis and other bone disorders. Their study concludes that sugars, not proteins, are key organic building blocks that account for bone’s toughness and stiffness.
New Pheromone Sprayer Leads Amorous Moths Astray
For decades, apple and pear growers have “adorned” their orchards with hundreds of plastic dispensers that emit a chemical sex attractant, or pheromone, to disrupt codling moth mating. Now, thanks to Agricultural Research Service (ARS) studies in Wapato, Wash., growers could soon be spraying the pheromone instead.
New Giant Molecule Created
Ulrich Kortz, Professor of Chemistry at Jacobs University, and his team successfully synthesized a polyoxometalate with 100 Tungsten and 20 Cerium atoms that has a molar mass of about 30 kilo Dalton. With a maximum diameter of 4.2 nm the inorganic molecule is comparable in size to large complex bio-molecules or even small viruses.
Complementary Medicine Can Help With Chronic Pain
Some of the pain medications had side effects that made it difficult for Jones to perform his job. Occupational therapy intervened with acupressure, modifications for performing daily activities and adaptive devices, such as a long handle reacher that allowed him to put on socks without bending over.
Scent Therapy product line - Keeps Harmful Chemicals Out of the Bloodstream
The Sense of Smell Lab, a division of The Orion Group Ltd., announced today that they will incorporate the sophisticated non transdermal patch to their new Scent Therapy product line. The patch technology uses a uniquely designed adhesive barrier to prevent their proprietary scent formulas from crossing the skin and entering the bloodstream. The company currently uses a non transdermal patch with their libido enhancing product, Scentuelle, which is receiving positive reviews for its non invasive approach to health and wellness.
Human Embryonic Stem Cells Remain Embryonic Because Of Epigenetic Factors
A human embryonic stem cell is reined in — prevented from giving up its unique characteristics of self-renewal and pluripotency — by the presence of a protein modification that stifles any genes that would prematurely instruct the cell to develop into heart or other specialized tissue. But, thanks to the simultaneous presence of different protein modifications, stem cells are primed and poised, ready to develop into specialized body tissue, Singapore scientists reported in the journal Cell Stem Cell.
Cause Of Visual Problems Among Children Of Hypothyroid Mothers Found
Children of women with hypothyroidism—an under-active thyroid—who had elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in the first and second trimesters of pregnancy, had a significantly reduced ability to see visual contrasts, compared to women with hypothyroidism with normal TSH levels during the first two trimesters, and pregnant women with normal thyroid levels, according to a new study.
Fortifying Feed With Biodiesel Co-products
Biofuel research isn’t just a matter of finding the right type of biomass—corn grain, soybean oil, animal fat, wood or other material—and converting it into fuel. Scientists must also find environmentally and economically sound uses for the by-products of biofuel production. Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists Brian Kerr and William Dozier have done just that.
